I run the Pain Medicine Service at the MSCPA/Angell AMC, which provides pain assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic pain for both in-patients and outpatients. The service also provides palliative and hospice care to outpatients. Most of our patients have complex problem lists that complicate the treatment for pain (like renal failure or liver disease) or have difficult to treat pain because of the cause (like advanced oncology cases). My interest in pain medicine grew during my dozen years on the Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Service at Angell AMC, during which I practiced and taught pain medicine in the ER and ICU. I received specialty training during a sabbatical that included rotations in the pain medicine department of Children's Hospital/Boston, Cumming's/Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine and acupuncture training at CSU.
